Record a PowerPoint cleanup as a Copilot skill

A recording checklist for Copilot's Record Skill in PowerPoint: one outcome, under 10 minutes, changes visible before Stop, instructions edited before Upload, and when to switch the skill off.

Pick one PowerPoint cleanup you repeat every week, such as restyling tables, and record it once in a real deck with Copilot's Record Skill. Keep it under 10 minutes, check every change is on the slide before you press Stop, and read Copilot's draft instructions before you upload the skill.

Steps follow Microsoft Support's Record a skill in Copilot in PowerPoint article and Message Center post MC1490903, checked 14 October 2026. The Kestrel Freight example is made up.

For how Copilot handled a whole steering committee deck against ChatGPT, see the ChatGPT vs Copilot in PowerPoint test.

Can you see Record Skill in your PowerPoint?

Microsoft Support says Copilot may be missing from PowerPoint if it isn't included in your Microsoft 365 subscription or your organisation's settings don't allow it. MC1490903 lists Microsoft 365 Copilot as the affected product, and the article applies to PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, including the Mac and iPad versions.

MC1490903, posted on 7 October 2026, says general availability rolls out worldwide, starting and finishing in early October 2026, with no admin action needed. If the option still isn't there, ask your IT team whether Copilot skills are switched on for your account before you look for a workaround.

Choose one cleanup worth recording

A good candidate is a change you make the same way to most decks, where you can see the result on the slide. Microsoft suggests recurring slide formatting, table cleanup, chart styling, logo placement, layout changes and regular presentation updates. Give each skill a single outcome. If your Friday routine fixes tables and also rewrites the summary slide, that's two skills.

Record in a real deck that needs the cleanup, so every change you make leaves something visible behind. A copy of last week's deck works well because you can compare it with the original afterwards.

When the skill goes wrong or should be switched off

These are the failure modes Microsoft's limits point to, plus my own reading of what a recording can't know.

To turn a skill off, select Settings in the Copilot pane > Manage plugins & skills > Custom skills, where you can also edit or delete it. Microsoft says a skill you turn off isn't used automatically and doesn't appear in the skills menu. I'd switch it off when the house style or deck layout changes, or when a run changes something it shouldn't, then record again on a fresh copy rather than patching old instructions.

  • The last change is missing because you selected Stop while Copilot was still working.
  • A step you did in Excel or another window never made it into the skill.
  • Something you only explained out loud isn't in the instructions.
  • The recording ran past 10 minutes because it tried to cover more than one job.
  • The draft kept a one-off fix as if it should happen every week.
  • The skill fires on decks it wasn't meant for, because the description doesn't say when not to use it.
