Ask Gmail a question about your mail, such as when a meeting starts or whether a customer replied. If an AI Overview appears, open the messages it cites and check the answer there. This guide covers eligible UK work and school accounts.

Can your UK Workspace account see it?
AI Overviews in Gmail search are not available to personal Gmail accounts in the UK. Google also excludes personal accounts in the EEA, Switzerland and Japan. For UK readers, you need an eligible work or school Workspace account with Gmail set to English.
Google lists Business Starter, Standard and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus; Frontline Plus; Google AI Pro for Education; and AI Expanded Access. Your organisation must also allow Gemini in Gmail and Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail. If either is disabled, ask your administrator.
Google lists a gradual rollout for Rapid Release domains from 3 September 2026, taking up to 15 days. Scheduled Release starts on 21 September, with one to three days for the feature to appear. If an Overview is missing, check your account's rollout, plan, language and settings before changing the question.
Both Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet and Google Workspace smart features must be on. Review those settings before enabling them, as they affect more than search. The feature currently works in English.
How do you ask for one fact?
Open Gmail on a computer. Type a full question or a descriptive phrase in the search box, then press Enter. Google's Help says Overviews are built for natural language. Classic operators such as from:, is:unread or has:attachment turn the Overview off.
Try a question that identifies the person or event: “When is my next meeting with Alex?” or “Has Meadowgate replied about the revised delivery date?” These are suggested questions, not results from a live inbox. Add a project or date if the first search is too broad.
If no Overview appears, try a more specific question before you assume the feature is missing. Name the person, the trip or the project. Leave operators out of that first try.
How do you check the Overview?
Open the cited messages and check the date, amount, code or person you plan to act on. If the Overview invents a time or combines two customers, disregard that answer. Try a narrower question or use ordinary search to find the original message.
Google says the Overview combines information across messages. Check for revised figures and conflicting replies, especially when several people or projects have similar names.
Keep questions that worked as examples for next time. If an operator prevented the Overview, remove it and try again. If the messages themselves are incomplete or contradictory, find the missing information or ask the sender. Rewording the search cannot settle what the mail does not say.
Turning off Google Workspace smart features also disables other Workspace AI features, including the Gemini side panel in Gmail. You can review the setting under Settings > See all settings > General > Google Workspace smart features.
