Ask Gemini in Google Chat: what happens to your history

Ask Gemini replaces the Google Chat side panel from 26 August 2026. Existing Gemini conversations will not migrate. Check what to save and how exports work.

Ask Gemini is replacing Google Chat’s side panel: save useful history

Google will start replacing the Gemini side panel in Google Chat with Ask Gemini on 26 August 2026. Existing side-panel conversations will not move across. Before the change reaches your account, copy any useful decisions, reusable prompts, source trails or approved outputs into the system your team already uses.

Treat an export as backup. It is a poor knowledge base for work that people need to find, check and own.

This is a source-based Guide using Google’s announcement and help pages. I have not tested Ask Gemini in Chat because the general rollout has not started.

What happens to your Gemini in Google Chat history?

Google says conversation history from the current Gemini side panel in Chat will not migrate to Ask Gemini. The replacement gives users a new set of sessions, but it does not carry the old side-panel conversations into them.

Google has not said that those old conversations will be deleted as soon as Ask Gemini appears. The confirmed limit is narrower: they will not be available inside the replacement surface.

That still causes a continuity problem. A useful project decision may exist in an old conversation, yet the next person looking for it will search Drive, a project page or the new Ask Gemini sessions. If the decision matters, move it into the record people already trust.

Google also confirms two related changes:

Exports file this conversation data under Gemini in Workspace, rather than Google Chat. That product name matters when you or an admin review the archive.

  • the existing Gemini side panel will no longer appear in Chat for affected users
  • Gems will stop being available from the Chat side panel, although they will remain in the side panels of other Workspace apps

When does Ask Gemini roll out in Google Chat?

The rollout starts on 26 August 2026 for Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. Google says it may take up to 15 days for the feature to appear.

At launch, the change applies to eligible users whose Google Account language is English. Google lists these editions:

Ask Gemini is available by default when an organisation has enabled Gemini in Workspace in Chat and Workspace Intelligence for all apps. Individual users must also be enrolled in Workspace Smart Features.

Google’s current help page still describes Ask Gemini as part of the Gemini Beta and warns that some users may lack some features. That wording may change as the general rollout begins. Expect access and capability to vary during the rollout window.

Eligible Workspace customers receive temporary higher usage limits through 1 October 2026. Google says normal usage limits will apply after that date, with details due in the Help Centre.

What does Ask Gemini add to Google Chat?

Ask Gemini will appear under Shortcuts in Google Chat. Google says it can:

These are launch claims, rather than hands-on findings. The useful test will be whether Ask Gemini finds the right source, shows where an answer came from and asks for clear confirmation before it changes a task or event.

  • search Workspace data in Gmail, Drive, Calendar and Chat
  • catch users up on conversations and topics
  • draft messages, documents, slides and spreadsheets
  • create and manage tasks or calendar events
  • generate images and run research using selected sources
  • keep separate sessions that users can reopen

What should you save before Ask Gemini arrives?

Copying every experiment and abandoned draft into Drive will create another search problem. Save the material that would be costly, risky or annoying to reconstruct:

Match the destination to the work. Put a project decision in the project record. Add a reusable prompt to the team’s prompt collection. Save an approved document in Drive with a clear owner and review date.

  • decisions that people are already acting on
  • prompts or instructions used for repeatable work
  • source links that support an answer or recommendation
  • final outputs that have been shared, approved or put into use
  • assumptions, limits and warnings attached to those outputs
  • anything another person expects to find later

A five-minute check of your Google Chat Gemini history

1. Review recent side-panel conversations

Open the current Gemini side panel in Google Chat and scan your recent conversations. Look for material that has moved beyond casual thinking and now affects real work.

2. Separate the result from its evidence

Copy the source links with any answer that depends on them. A polished answer without its evidence is difficult to verify later.

3. Move useful work into the normal record

Copy the final decision, prompt or output into the relevant Drive file, project page or approved shared system. Add enough context for another person to understand where it came from, who owns it and what still needs checking.

4. Decide whether an export is justified

An export may be useful for retention, audit or a formal handover. It is excessive for recovering one good prompt. For most day-to-day work, moving the useful result into its proper record is faster and easier to use later.

5. Check the replacement after rollout

Once Ask Gemini appears, confirm which Workspace services it can search, which actions it can take and what your admin settings allow. Check whether your Gems remain available in other Workspace apps and what limits apply after 1 October.

If you use Ask Gemini to draft work, run the result through the eight-point check for AI output before you send it.

How do you export Gemini in Workspace history?

Google gives end users and Workspace super admins different routes.

Individual users: Google Takeout

Google Takeout lets users download their Google data when their organisation permits it. Google’s Workspace admin guidance says admins must allow Takeout before users can download work data.

In Takeout, select the data you need and look for Gemini in Workspace. Choose an archive format and destination, then request the export. Availability depends on your organisation’s controls, so contact your Workspace admin if the product is missing or Takeout is blocked.

Workspace admins: Data Export

Workspace super admins can use Google’s Data Export tool to export organisation data, including Google Workspace with Gemini data.

This is a formal organisation export, with wider scope and access controls. Google says the archive is available no earlier than 48 hours after it starts. An export usually takes about 72 hours and may take up to 14 days. It is a poor last-minute route for retrieving one conversation.

For most users, the five-minute review will do. Use the admin export route when retention, audit or handover needs justify its scope and delay.

How should you protect exported Gemini data?

An export may contain sensitive work data. Keep it within your organisation’s approved storage and access controls. Do not move it into a personal account, upload it wholesale to another AI service or place it in a broadly shared folder.

Apply the same retention, classification and deletion rules used for the original work. Give the archive an owner. Record why it exists and when it should be reviewed or removed.

Copying every chat also produces a large, poorly structured archive. Preserve the work product, its evidence and its owner. Keep the surrounding conversation only when it adds context that the final record needs.

What should you check when Ask Gemini arrives?

Google’s announcement explains the intended features and rollout limits. It cannot show how well the new surface works inside your organisation’s data and controls.

When I get access, I will check:

Those checks may change the advice in this Guide. Until then, there is no hands-on verdict on Ask Gemini.

  • whether sessions are easy to find, rename and continue
  • how clearly Ask Gemini identifies the Workspace and web sources behind an answer
  • what happens when Gmail, Drive and Chat contain conflicting information
  • whether task and calendar actions ask for clear confirmation
  • how the new history, limits and export behaviour work in practice

What should your team do before 26 August?

Review recent Gemini side-panel conversations and move any decision, source trail, reusable prompt or approved output into its proper record. Start a formal export only when your retention or handover needs justify it.

Chat is a convenient place to think. Decisions and approved work need a named owner and a place built for people to find them.
